Early March 2028 – Telaraña Coffee Shop, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

Trying to stay ahead of his surveillance that he was sure was always on his heels, Dr. Crossley had communicated, using a new burner phone, to Dr. Freedman and Dr. Carson to meet him just across the Mexican border from El Paso, TX, to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and meet him at the Telaraña Coffee Shop to discuss recent events and future plans. Dr. Crossley wasn’t sure he should bring up what happened in Woodland Park with the Tallus Lab, better to let Dr. Carson bring it up if it’s appropriate to discuss it.

“Come have a seat,” Dr. Crossley said as Dr. Carson and Dr. Freedman approached. “I notice the two of you shared a taxi; did you come down together?”

Dr. Freedman replied, “We met in El Paso and drove down, parked the car in a parking garage, and took a taxi here. Didn’t want the rental car associated with our meeting.”

Dr. Freedman asked Dr. Crossley, “Dad, what the hell is happening? First a coffee shop in Peyton Junction, then Austin, and now Ciudad Juarez, Mexico? Are you making the international rounds of coffee shops or what? The university expects me to be around, pretty much all the time, and there none too happy with me flying all over the place, especially when I can’t tell them why. What’s next, Istanbul? I hear the coffee is second to none there.”

“We just can’t be too careful,” said Dr. Crossley. “Too much is at stake to make dumb mistakes. I’m sorry, but this is important. I think we caught a break catching up to at least one of our AI entities. Need to discuss it, get both of your opinions on which one it might be and what we do about it.”

“By the way,” began Dr. Carson, “how was Woodland Park, run across any dinosaurs, or old scientists maybe?”

“More riddles and innuendos,” said Dr. Freedman. “Can we please take in plain English. Trying to interpret between lines is giving me a headache. And why were you in Woodland Park? And why were both you AND Adam in Woodland Park? Don’t even try to tell me that was a coincidence. Dad, please don’t tell me you’ve dragged my brother into all of this. This is the last thing he needs.”

Dr. Crossley replied, “No Sheila, your brother is not involved in this, per se. The company he does some business with just needed a little advice from me; that’s all.”

“The company Adam works with just needed some simple advice from the world’s foremost AI expert,” said Dr. Freedman, “gee, my mistake…NOT! Spill it, what is going on?”

Dr. Carson jumped into the conversation, “It’s my fault. I got your father involved with a new, no one ever needs to know about, robotics company. Your brother moonlights from his IT position as their program manager. He understands more than most about AI systems and architecture and has a head for schedules and budgets. Skills your dad could use improvement on.
